Breadcrumbs are a nice way to add crunch to any meal. Trust us, this is the one time you want a crumby meal! Instead of buying them premade and full of words you can’t pronounce, make homemade breadcrumbs at home with last night’s leftover French bread or that loaf sitting in your breadbox that’s about to turn. Don’t use stale bread or you’ll have stale breadcrumbs!

Simply tear your bread into chunks, throw it in the food processor and pulse. Make flavors that suit your family’s pallet by adding Italian, Mexican or Asian seasonings. We’d even venture to add buffalo seasoning mix (cayenne pepper, onion powder and garlic powder)—delish!

When you’re ready to coat your chicken cutlets or top your mac ‘n cheese, just take them out of the freezer, let them defrost for a few minutes then toast them in a skillet.

Instructions

  • Tear the bread into large chunks and place in the food processor. Pulse until the bread is completely broken up and is in small crumbs. Transfer the crumbs to resealable bags and freeze until needed.
  • To toast the crumbs, heat enough oil or butter in a skillet to moisten the crumbs. Toast until the crumbs sound dry in the pan.
  • Sprinkle over mac and cheese, casseroles, or any dish where you need a bit of crunch.
