Tired of grabbing a straw, only to find a boatload of others tagging along? Our DIY straw holder is a nostalgic solution that’s both practical and inexpensive.

You only need a few items to create this project. We repurposed a spaghetti jar, but any glass jar at least 10″ tall will get you started. Next, find a Mason jar band and lid that fits tightly inside the spaghetti jar.

Drill a hole in the center of both the spaghetti jar lid and the Mason jar lid, glue the Mason jar lid and band together using a hot glue gun, then push a 10″ screw through the Mason jar lid. Make sure the head of the screw is facing downward, towards the bottom of the jar.

Push the tip of the screw through the spaghetti jar lid and either screw or glue a colorful knob on top. Fill with straws, place on your countertop and enjoy a good-looking way in which to keep straws organized, sanitary and easily accessible.

Did you know that reeds of grass were used as drinking straws since ancient Egyptian times? It was only in the late 1800’s when Marvin Stone invented the first paper straw.

He developed a process of winding wax coated paper in a narrow spiral to eliminate the grassy taste of the reed as well as any fruit seeds floating around in a beverage. This process became the basis for spiral tubing found in many of today’s products.
