We’re all for the cooler weather months, but not when it follows us indoors! A few degrees of warmth make all the difference—and we love a craft that not only utilizes our creativity but also contributes to the greater good of the household!

You can make draft blockers for doors and for windows. Pick a medium to heavy weight fabric for durability and choose a fun pattern that matches your decor. Simply pin it, sew it and fill it—it’s as easy as 1-2-3. We just recommend that you have someone hold onto the draft blocker while you add the filling—or else you might end up with beans all over the floor!

How to make a draft blocker

Ingredients
  • tape measure or ruler
  • ½ yard of medium- to heavy-weight fabric
  • scissors
  • iron
  • straight pins
  • sewing machine
  • large bag of poly-pellets, rice, beans or kitty litter
  • funnel
Instructions
  1. Measure the width of your door (or window) then add 1½–2″ to the measurement. Our door measured 36″, so we cut the fabric to 38″.
  2. Fold fabric in half, inside out, and pin in place along the unfinished edges.
  3. Sew together using sewing machine, leaving one end open. Remove pins then flip fabric so the pattern is right side out.
  4. Fill draft blocker about 90% full using poly-pellets, rice, beans or kitty litter (kitty litter is probably the most cost effective). The easiest way to do this is to have someone hold the fabric while you use a funnel to fill it. Once 90% full, fold the open end of the fabric inward about half an inch, pin into place then sew closed.
