Each one of us has stress that we have to deal with on a daily basis. Whether it’s related to work, family or finances, stress has a way of manifesting into physical ailments like pain, trouble sleeping, or a general feeling of anxiety. We’ve found a way to help combat some of those physical manifestations of stress – CBD Oil. You may have heard about CBD oil before and wondered…. What is it? What is it good for? How do I use it? How do I find the best brand? And how the heck are people cooking with CBD oil? Well, we want to help you answer all those questions. And, of course, share some delicious recipes as well!

What is CBD Oil?

CBD (cannabidiol) is derived from the bud of the hemp plant. It differs from the hempseed oil you may see in the grocery store which contains no cannabinoids (and therefore no properties to help reduce stress & pain).

CBD oil is a non-psychoactive oil that works with the chemical receptors in the body to help regulate your body’s natural rhythm and improve your overall well-being . Unlike marijuana, CBD oil contains only minimal traces of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), so you can’t get high. CBD oil just allows you to feel more balanced and relaxed.

Benefits of CBD Oil

There are many benefits to CBD oil, with one of the main being that it helps you feel calm and reduces anxiety. In today’s fast-paced world, many of our modern diseases are related to stress. Being able to relax and unwind can help you prevent stress-related diseases and calm your mind.

CBD oil is also hugely beneficial for relieving pain. Our bodies have a system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which regulates functions like sleep, appetite, pain and our immune system. Studies have shown that CBD helps reduce chronic pain by impacting the receptors for this system and interacting with neurotransmitters. That’s a lot of fancy wording to say that a drop of CBD oil can help you feel better, naturally.

How to Use CBD Oil

CBD Oil comes in many forms, so there’s a variety of ways you can use it! There are topical treatments that allow you pinpoint specific areas of pain. There are also ingestible oils that you can take on their own or mix into food and drink (that’s what we used for the recipe below). There’s even CBD oil for anxious pets to help them calm down during a big storm or deal with chronic pain.

The type of CBD you choose depends on your specific goals. If you’re looking for a helpful guide to get started, check out this helpful FAQ guide from Populum.

Cooking with CBD Oil

One of the most popular ways to consume CBD Oil is by incorporating it into your foods. While there are recipes all over the internet, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind before you begin cooking with CBD Oil.

Use Fat

The cannabinoids in CBD Oil bind well with fat and oil. We recommend combining it with an oil-based ingredient like butter or coconut oil, or mixing it with full-fat milk in order to maximize the benefits of your CBD Oil.

Avoid heat

All oils have what’s called a “smoke point.” A smoke point is the temperature at which the oil will start to burn. When you cook with an oil that’s been pushed past its smoke point, you can not only ruin the flavor of the dish (there’s usually a burnt taste associated with it), but you also dimish the nutritional benefits of the oil and can create harmful free radicals.

When you heat your CBD oil too high, you’ll decrease the overall effectiveness of the oil and will not receive the health benefits. Stick with recipes that can be refrigerated or enjoyed at room temperature. If you are going to heat up your CBD Oil, it’s recommended to mix it with another oil that has a higher smoke point such as avocado oil

Control your dose

When you first start cooking with CBD Oil, you’ll want to start small. The recipes we have created use a few drops dispersed amongst several servings. You can use more or less CBD oil depending on what you’re comfortable with.

To figure out the correct dosage for you, you can start by dropping a small amount under your tongue and swishing it around in your mouth. The Populum bottles have lines to easily indicate how much oil you have in your dropper, so you can see test how much works for you. Then, you’ll know how much CBD oil to incorporate based on the number of serving sizes the recipe makes.
